5 Common Car Issues Pierce County Drivers Face Every Fall

September 27, 2025

Once the cooler air sets in and the leaves start piling up, many Pierce County drivers notice their vehicles behaving differently. Morning starts take a little longer, windows fog up, and some systems don’t feel quite as responsive. Fall might be a beautiful time of year, but it can quietly introduce problems if your vehicle isn’t prepared.

Changing temperatures, heavier rainfall, and leaf debris all create conditions that can affect how your car performs. Whether you drive daily through Tacoma or take backroads to Lakewood or Fife, knowing what to watch for this time of year can save you from an unexpected breakdown.

Here are five of the most common vehicle issues local drivers face each fall and what you can do to prevent them.

1. Weak Battery on Cold Mornings

As the temperature drops, your battery doesn’t work quite as efficiently. Even if the mornings don’t feel that cold yet, they’re often cool enough to highlight a battery that’s nearing the end of its life. If your car hesitates when starting or the engine cranks slowly, it’s a sign that the battery may need to be tested.

Batteries generally last three to five years. If yours is getting older or showing signs of wear, a cold snap could be enough to leave you stranded. It's also a good idea to clean the terminals and check for corrosion to keep the electrical connection strong.

2. Fogged or Frosty Windshields

Increased humidity and cool overnight temperatures often lead to fogged windows and light frost. This isn’t just an inconvenience, it can become a safety concern if visibility stays poor during your drive.

A working defroster and a clean cabin air filter are essential. If your defroster takes too long to clear the glass or blows only lukewarm air, the HVAC system may need attention. Also, check for moisture collecting inside the vehicle. Wet carpets or floor mats can create a humid cabin that fogs up faster.

3. Tire Pressure Drops

Tire pressure naturally decreases as the air gets colder. In Pierce County, where daytime and nighttime temperatures can vary quite a bit, you might find yourself needing to top off your tires more often.

Low tire pressure affects your fuel economy and makes it harder for the tread to grip wet pavement or leaf-covered roads. Be sure to check tire pressure monthly and adjust it based on the manufacturer’s recommended level, which you’ll find on the sticker inside the driver’s door. Don’t forget to check the spare while you're at it.

4. Streaking or Failing Wiper Blades

Rain is a big part of fall around here, and your wipers need to be up to the task. If they leave streaks, chatter across the windshield, or fail to clear water completely, it’s time for a new set.

Visibility during heavy rain or mist depends on how well your wipers work. If they’re worn out, even a short drive can become stressful. Consider switching to beam-style blades for better performance, and make sure your washer fluid is filled with a blend that’s designed to handle cooler temperatures and road grime.

5. Leaf Buildup and Blocked Drains

Falling leaves might look nice, but when they collect around your windshield or hood, they can create problems you won’t notice right away. Leaves often pile up in the cowl area or near drainage channels, blocking water from flowing out of the engine bay or HVAC vents.

When that happens, moisture can back up and leak into the cabin. Over time, you might notice a musty smell or even mold developing inside the car. To prevent it, clear away leaves regularly, especially after rain or wind, and check around the base of the windshield and under the hood for any debris.
